AngioSplice™ is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics that modulate angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. Existing therapies pursue a "shotgun" approach that silences naturally occurring anti-angiogenic signals along with pathologic pro-angiogenic signals and has the potential for significant off-target toxicities. The AngioSplice™ approach promises to produce safer, more effective therapies that address the >$8 billion market opportunity for anti-angiogenic therapies in oncology and ophthalmology
AngioSplice™ has identified a novel approach to modulating angiogenesis based on specifically controlling the balance of pro- and anti-angiogenic isoforms of the major angiogenesis signaling molecule, VEGF-A (VEGF). VEGF is a validated therapeutic target and VEGF-directed therapy currently constitutes the gold-standard treatment for wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and other neovascular diseases of the eye. The AngioSplice™ approach is underpinned by strong pre-clinical evidence that selectively controlling the balance of pro- and anti-angiogenic isoforms of VEGF has the potential to generate greater efficacy and improved safety relative to current therapies
The company’s initial focus on neovascular diseases of the eye affords the opportunity to leverage established pre-clinical models towards a rapid proof of concept. Neovascular diseases of the eye constitute a large and growing market opportunity, affecting more than 16 million people in the U.S. alone. AMD, the most prevalent form of neovascular eye disease, constituted a ~$2 billion market in 2008, with disease prevalence expected to increase more than 50% by 2020.
